Create heritage interiors using original period features and salvaged pieces and it will stand the test of time. Simply put, old looks good both now and in the future.
In her new book, Heritage Style, author Selina Lake reminds us that using antique and reclaimed pieces can create warm and relaxing spaces with the added benefit of sustainability. Salvage pieces add a wow factor too.
The book's images cover the variety of homes heritage style can suit from elegant town house to country cottage to modern eclectic. Selina shows how to bring instant character from antique, salvaged or reclaimed pieces with architectural elements such as columns, beams, floorboards, panelling, shutters, doors, mouldings, fireplaces and baths to smaller decorative elements such as lighting, mirrors and tiles. Heritage decor inspiration is also given with examples of colour, pattern, furniture, art, ornament and fabric.
The first image shown is one of my own favourites from the book, 'Elizabeth Rose’s bedroom, salvaged cladding with a rich patina is accented with a sage green door, while exposed ceiling beams and an earthy red fireplace create a homely, rustic mood. The room is given a boho twist by simply hanging a favourite garment on the door.'
She also dips into the beauty of weathered vintage and salvaged features used to add 'surprises around every corner' in a heritage garden such as old tables and chairs, urns or vases, sun dial or bird bath, reclaimed brick patio and raised beds made from reclaimed railway sleepers.
Selina recommends sourcing antique, reclaimed and salvaged pieces from salvage yards or from online marketplaces such as salvoweb.com and SalvoWEB has a useful worldwide directory of dealers together with the marketplace of architectural salvage and reclaimed building materials, garden and decorative antiques, home and fashion items.
Based in Guildford, Surrey, author, Selina is also a freelance stylist: 'passionate about every job' with 'a great resource of props and craft skills including sewing, painting, baking and floristry.'
