It may have caught your attention that a late Victorian shepherd's hut recently sold at auction for £13,000. Charterhouse, Sherborne had been asked to clear a Dorset country house for auction and had discovered the old shepherds hut in the garden. The auction estimate had been £800 to £1,200. The auction was held on 5th May 2021 at the Charterhouse sale rooms, Sherborne, Dorset.
A shepherd's hut originally provided simple rural accommodation on wheels enabling shepherds to be near their flock; especially important during the lambing season. The huts have since become popular as home work or retreat spaces or as overnight stay accommodation for extra guests and holiday rentals.
Add in a stove, kitchen, electricity, a shower and some insulation then it could even make the perfect tiny home. The basic shepherds hut design has also been redesigned and used to create tiny reclaimed homes on wheels for one or possibly two people.
Architectural salvage dealers will rescue and restore old shepherd's huts but original huts have become harder to find. So many are now recrafted from reclaimed or new materials.
Images show two recrafted shepherd huts made from reclaimed materials together with another small space option, a 1920s revolving summerhouse. All currently for sale on the Salvo online marketplace from Salvo Code member, Symonds Salvage.
Original shepherd hut's or spare parts can also be found for sale at the architectural salvage and bygone auctions held at the T W Gaze auction sales in Diss, Norfolk. See the image of a shepherd hut sold at a previous Gaze auction. There will be a Salvo Anniversary architectural salvage auction linked to the Salvo Fest at T W Gaze, Saturday 26th June 2021.
