'Storage: Flog The Lot' from RDF on Channel 5 is a new reality TV salvage gameshow offering, already three episodes in which can still be seen online, with three more to go in November. The format of each episode has four themed truckloads of antiques and salvage, which can only be partially seen (akin to Storage Wars which is presumably why the word 'storage' is in the title) in a locked warehouse are auctioned by Addison Gelpey to a group of around fifteen dealers who then have to sell the lots at a profit.
Among the professional punters, which seem to change slightly in each episode, were Chris Hamilton of Rutland Garden Classics, Dave Channing of Kent Reclamation, and seasoned TV professionals Paul Johnson and Dale Sumner of Ribble Reclamation formerly of 'Seeking Salvage' 2011 and 'Trash to Treasure' 2012.
Cutting remarks were heard during the bidding, and at the end of the auction the losers retreated to a nearby diner to commiserate, while the winning bidder assessed the load prior to selling it to trade contacts and others. The winner of each episode was the dealer who made the most profit.
Chris Hamilton won twice, making £7,000 profit on an old jeep, and Ribble Rec won with an 'End of the Pier' collection. Graeme and Alex of Jessie May's came second with the 'Country Kitchen' lot which included a good wide and decorative Georgian downhearth grate which they restored but undersold.
Storage: Flog The Lot's viewing figures were 627,000. This compares to ITV4 Storage Wars at 350,000 and BBC1 daytime Bargain Hunt at around 2m - talking of which inveterate showman and media luvvie Tim Wonnacott (see SalvoNEWS 142 18 Feb 1992 etc), formerly of salvage auctioneers Sotheby's Billingshurst (now Summers Place Auctions), was high-kicked out of Strictly this week with viewers of nine million.
