Salvo Ltd
In 1991, Thornton Kay established Salvo, a network with the main aim of making it easier for people to buy and sell old building materials. Part of which involved creating, with partner Hazel Matravers, the very first printed Salvo directory.
SalvoWEB, the online marketplace, followed on shortly afterwards. Although Salvo does not hold stock, buy or sell but rather connects buyers and sellers. It provided, even from those early days, a platform enabling the trade to advertise and sell antique and reclaimed items online.
SalvoWEB quickly became the 'go to' source for reclamation friendly designers, architects, builders and reclaimed home renovators to source architectural salvage reclaimed and building materials. Prior to establishing Salvo, Thornton had gained many years experience working with architectural salvage. He set up and ran Walcot Reclamation, based in Bath, UK with partner, Rick Knapp. It was the world's first place selling old parts of buildings that was actually named a 'reclamation yard' by them in 1976.
Salvo has continued to grow and now provides an information network together with a research and consultancy service for architectural salvage, reclaimed building materials, architectural and garden antiques.
SalvoWEB is now global. The online architectural salvage, antiques and reclamation marketplace enables you to search business and private listings to discover antique, reclaimed and salvaged items both for sale and wanted, demolition and dismantling alerts from fine architectural and garden antiques to reclaimed building materials. Source everything from fireplaces and stone walling to statuary and chandeliers. SalvoWEB is the marketplace on which dealers and privates can sell antique, reclaimed and recrafted items.
SalvoWEB has since added the Salvo Shop sector, where you can buy direct from selected Salvo Code dealers. This gives extra trust to consumers, knowing they are dedicated to providing good standards in both the selling and buying of architectural salvage, reclaimed building materials, decorative objects, garden antiques and furniture.
The SalvoWEB online dealer directory now covers the UK, USA, Ireland, France, Australia, Italy, Holland, Belgium and over forty other countries making it the world's most comprehensive architectural salvage directory. Find your local reclamation yard or salvage showroom and specialist businesses dealing in architectural salvage and reclaimed building materials together with architectural, decorative and garden antiques. Other useful contacts listed include auction houses, craftspeople and restoration professionals, reclamation friendly designers, builders and architects together with recommended places to visit.
Salvo has also created the UK & Ireland 500 futuREuse directory, a focused edit of the Salvo directory aimed at construction professionals enabling them to source specific and larger quantities of reclaimed building materials.
Salvo Theft Alerts work to help recover stolen items: create your own online alert on our marketplace for stolen architectural salvage, decorative and garden antiques, sculpture and reclaimed materials.
The Salvo Code membership denotes trust and that the dealer is committed to high standards to potential customers and the media. The Code is a world-leading reclamation assurance, symbolised by the crane logo – an ancient symbol of vigilance which flags trust to both clients and press. A peer-reviewed community of businesses that meet high standards in responsibly sourced architectural salvage and reclaimed materials. Look out for the Salvo Code crane logo displayed on member adverts, websites and in showrooms or yards.
The Salvo Pocket Guide of Salvo Code members, printed edition is distributed at fairs and events and also available to reclaimed renovators, designers, architects, builders and dealers on request. The latest Salvo Pocket Guide with the Restoration Edition is in digital format too.
Salvo News Architectural salvage, antiques, reclaimed building materials, fairs, auctions, design and eco news features online or you can subscribe to receive the monthly eSalvo straight to your inbox.
Since 1997, periodically Salvo organised and ran the Salvo fair. On request, Team Salvo has also created architectural salvage zones at other architectural salvage and antique fairs. Follow Salvo social media channels and subscribe to SalvoNEWS and/or our Podcast to keep informed of future events.
Salvo is working to increase reuse: in recent years we have worked with Rotor, based in Brussels, and other European partners on the FCRBE EU research project which aimed to increase the reuse of reclaimed building materials.
Team Salvo toured the UK and Ireland to create the UK&Ireland futuREuse 500 directory aimed at trade professionals sourcing larger quantities of reclaimed building materials.
We are currently rolling out our Truly Reclaimed certification. The Truly Reclaimed mark assures that a product or batch of material is genuinely antique or reclaimed and therefore offers a genuine reduction in carbon emissions.
For Salvo Code/ TR certified member dealers, Team Salvo can create a video and/or Podcast of your yard and showroom.
Prove your sustainability commitment to clients, investors and people living, working and using your built spaces: new build or renovation projects for construction and design in private, retail, restaurant, hotel or event venues reusing unique items or reclaimed building materials can also be Truly Reclaimed certified.
Projects can be featured in our Podcast or promoted via SalvoNEWS, social media and video to celebrate and encourage future TR reuse.
Team Salvo futuREuse consultancy includes TR design project guidance, pre-demolition reclamation audits, reuse pathways, embodied carbon assessment using (MRA) Multiple Reclamation Assessment); developed by Salvo to measure the carbon benefit of the reuse of reclaimed building material. This method is combined together with basic everyday comparisons to show clearly the benefits of reuse to both construction professionals and the general public.
Thornton's tip on buying salvage, ' Go with what is available because if you can adapt your design it will make it a lot cheaper and easier.'
Reuse for the world you want.
